Papillion, Nebraska is home to the Douglas Aircraft Company, which was founded in 1928. The company manufactured military and recreational aircraft until its sale to Boeing in 1994. Boeing continued production for a time at the plant before closing it down in 2006. Today, the property still sits vacant, unused since 2006. In 1927, John Douglas designed and built the P-2V Neptune amphibious airplane for USAAF testing. The plane became very popular with pilots and was later used by other nations such as Russia, China and France. In 1941, Douglas developed the XP-8U Eclipse reconnaissance Plane which served with USAF during WWII. After the war ended, XP-8Us were purchased by Japan who named them J1N Ryukyu Maru. This plane saw action in various conflicts including World War II and the Korean War. The Douglas Aircraft Company was sold to Boeing in 1994. At that time there were only 10 employees at the plant making small airplanes like transport jets like 737s and 757s but Boeing quickly grew into one of America’s leading aerospace companies creating some of history’s most iconic planes like Concorde, 747LM etcetera! The Papillion site sat idle for over a decade before being reopened as an attraction called “New Horizons” back in 2016! It has been announced that this will be their final year of operation so come out to enjoy all that this once thriving community has to offer!

In addition to agriculture, other principal industries include motel/motel services (seven units), retail trade (eight units), health care (four units) and two churches - First Presbyterian with 2,000 members and Adventist with 2,500 members - both of which serve as active congregations today.
