Papillion has several businesses: two restaurants, one barbershop and one dry goods store; four churches; two schools - Papillion Consolidated School District #1 and Harrison County High School - which serve grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; three banks - First National Bank of Papillion and United State Bank and Trust Company; two grocery stores - Davenport's Grocery Store and Prairie Market; one motel - Best Western Plus Western Inn & Suites; one gasoline station - Mobil Service Station;;one health clinic operated by Mercy Medical Center from 1984 until 2002 (); six houses on a 0.5 mile (0.8 km) wide strip along U S Highway 66 that served as a rural development experiment known as "The Strip". All but one were demolished during the later years of that program due to vandalism or simply abandonment ().

On July 15, 1888, a group of 3 men from Omaha traveling to Council Bluffs for supplies stopped over night at what is now Papillion on their way back home from Zionsville Missionary Baptist Church Services there that evening which led to the establishment of what became known as "the old stage line" which ran through present-day Papillion and connected it with Omaha via Keystone Station

The town experienced growth during World War II, with a large population of soldiers stationed here.
