Papillion is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest village in Nebraska and the second-smallest town in Nebraska after Lincoln. Papillion was laid out by James P. McDonald on November 6, 1881 as an agricultural settlement near what is now Kearney City. McDonald named it for his father-in-law, Patrick Papillion of Kentucky. The first settler to arrive in Papillion was Myron Hetherington on July 24, 1882. In 1895 James Crouse founded a small grocery store and two year later built a post office at the junction of State Highway 20 and Indian Road 2 (now US 36). In 1907 another small grocery store was built by J.Crouse & Son; this one became known as "The Grapes." A gasoline station opened there in 1909 followed by the first telephone line to that community in 1915. A new schoolhouse was built in 1916; it served as both a high school and primary school until 1959 when it became an Adult Education Center (AEC). A new church also replaced the original church which had been destroyed by a tornado five years earlier while serving as an impromptu polling place during Prohibition party elections that were held simultaneously throughout much of southern Nebraska.(1) In 1922 Harry Wirthman started selling ice cream from his truck down Main Street.(2) By 1931 most of the businesses had closed or moved away due to economic conditions but Wirthman continued to operate his truck until 1935 when he died suddenly at age 82.(3) In 1933 Eddie Swanson started selling gasoline oil from his garage at Second Street and Main Avenue; this business remains active today with Eddie Swanson's grandson running it.(4) A post office called Papillion was established at its present location on May 19, 1934;(5) however, mail service did not begin officially until October 3rd that year.(6) That same year Roosevelt High School opened its doors for students grades 9 through 12.;(7) although originally intended only for boys, women began attending Roosevelt High School starting with their freshman year in 1951 (8). The school has since grown into one of the largest schools within central Nebraska! After being abandoned for many years due to lack of traffic on state highways 10 & 20a/10p&20r lying just east of town center between I-80Exit 73 et al., finally Papillion’s main drag “Main Street” got repaved last fall/winter according to various online reports including mapquest updates dated Febuary 2019 with some 5400 sq ft paved over plus improved sidewalk making papillon feel more like home again!

Papillion is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County. The first settler in what is now Papillion was Nathan Kincaid in 1854. The town site was platted on November 15, 1865 by Hemanus Willard and his brother-in-law David Fenton. The name came from John Pahamontas, who had beendetailer for the Sioux City Railroad. A post office was established at Papillion on December 1st, 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 25th of that year. On February 26th, 1886 one thousand five hundred people from Dodge City gathered at the state fairgrounds near Papillion to celebrate Indian removal proceedings being moved forward there with great fanfare by governor Grover Cleveland; Omaha had already rioted two days earlier over a proposed boxing match between white men and Native Americans at the same venue headlined by Buffalo Bill Cody (the organizer). As part of a program to promote agricultural settlement in central Nebraska following passage of the Homestead Act by President James Buchanan in 1862 (), Governor Frank Leslie ordered all Indians removed from their homes outside Omaha within fifteen days or be forcibly taken into custody and transported to Kansas under martial law (). Over twenty-one thousand people were estimated to have participated in this process across fourteen states (). Papillion lay dormant for many years after Removal until it awoke again around 1912 when rancher Wm. Cattleman purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast of town from the government as part of his efforts to return Indian land back to its former owners while also providing irrigation water for settlers living downstream along what is now called Pahranich River Valley. Agricultural production increased rapidly due to this new location although some infrastructure development did not take place until after World War II when Interstate Highway 80 became available through Lincoln County; today papillonians drive down I-80 every day looking for those earliest pioneer homesteads!
