It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Omaha. The first Europeans to visit Papillion were two fur traders, David Thompson and Daniel Boone, in 1814. They named it after General James Purdie, who had died in 1794 while leading an expedition against the Sioux Nation on the Missouri River. In 1836, John Sikes built a cabin here and started trading with Indian groups around this area. He also founded a post office in 1837. The first train arrived in Papillion in 1886; it was operated by the Omaha & Council Bluffs Railroad. The town got its name from Colonel George Armstrong Papillon (1805-1873), who served as captain of company C of the 6th Nebraska infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and as commissioner for military affairs under Ulysses S. Grant's administration at Fort Douglas near Omaha; he also served as mayor of Omaha from 1865 to 1870.
