For many years this was the only place in Nebraska where cattle could be raised and sold. In 1907, Harry Bemis founded Bemis Dairy Company which became one of Nebraska’s largest farm businesses and remains so today with over 175 employees across three locations in Omaha and Papillion. Bemis also served as Mayor of Omaha from 1945 to 1951 and 1961 to 1969; he was twice term president of the Omaha City Council (1947-1949; 1959-1963). The company is still headquartered at 5th Street NE & Keystone Avenue NW in Omaha. In 1939, when World War II began there were just six people living in town: four men working for Harry Bemis' dairy company and two women making food for the troops stationed nearby at Camp Sheridan (later Fort Carson). By 1945 there were 1,600 residents located all around town including 400 farmers producing hay, cornstalks, wheat breads and other items for military use; 300 workers employed by local gasoline stations supplying Army trucks with fuel for their engines; 100 students from nearby schools taking classes during wartime months; 50 dogs keeping watch over munitions dumpsites adjacent to town limits; 20 citizens working on essential public works such as street paving and sidewalks during times of war emergency
