Papillion is a small town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,764 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hawkeye, NE-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Papillion was founded by pioneer James G. Papillion and his wife Lydia in 1859 on a tract of land that now includes much of what is today Papillion. James and Lydia were the first white people to settle in this area. They built a cabin near present day Papillion and started crop farming. In 1868 they moved to their present site where they erected a log school house which still stands today. The family operated a farm until 1902 when they sold it to Jens Christensen who developed it into an agricultural center known as "The Christensen Farm". In 1907 an act of the Nebraska Legislature designated Papillion as the capital of Lincoln County; however, the town never became its official capital due to lack of support from residents. In 1912 an act changed Lincoln County's name to Lincoln County, NE and papillon was again designated as the county seat since there had been no realignment of town boundaries since then! At that time, only about 350 people lived in papillon while over 2,000 people resided within one mile (3 km) of it! On July 15th 1926 local residents voted 3-1 in favor of annexation by Omaha; however this vote did not take effect because Omaha did not have enoughzonation votes to approve annexation without majority approval! On November 6th 1928 Omaha finally annexed papillon creating an even larger municipality with 740 citizens! The post office called papillon "Papillion" until 1959 when it changed its name back to "Lincoln." Today papillon remains a small but thriving community with active businesses including several churches and multiple schools located on or near its central square - home to many antique shops as well as several restaurants and summer camps for children year round!
