The area around today's Downtown Omaha was settled by farmers beginning in 1854 under the leadership of George Armstrong Custer during his drive against Sitting Bull's forces at Battle Creek National Battlefield west of town on July 24th, 1868. In 1865, Jonathan Edwards established North Western University (now Northwestern University) in what is now NorthSide neighborhood northeast of Downtown Omaha while Rear Admiral David Dixon conducted construction on Lincoln Memorial Drive (now Interstate 80). Dixon helped create Lincoln Park which became a major center for culture and commerce after it was created as a public greenfield site adjacent to First Congregational Church across current day Farnam Street from Deering Avenue northward.. In 1870s railroads arrived offering transportation opportunities beyond small towns east of Chicago that could only ship goods via waterborne vessels crossing rivers like the Missouri River orKansas River which made it difficult for farmers to transport goods inland from those regions.. In 1872 Nebraska legislature passed an act giving land within territorial boundaries southwest corner where Hastings Reservoir would be located east side streets between Cedar Rapids Avenue South and Iowa Streets new designation as "Downtown". Today this area includes much parts of today’s Midtown district including Jackson Heights Neighborhood Council Headquarters located at 701 Jackson Heights Boulevard NE
