This early settlement grew slowly due to lack of transportation options available until railroads arrived in 1893. At that time Omaha became an official site via platting agreement with buyers from neighboringCouncil Bluffs who were bypassing Council Bluffs for their new town alongThe Platte River because they thought this spot would be more advantageous due to its strategic location midway between Council Bluffs and Des Moines (then part of Iowa). In 1894 railroad officials transferred ownership of what would become known as The Burlington Railway Station from Boston Terminal Railroad Company trustees John Dolan and James Phelan to Northern Pacific Railway trustees George A Hennepin and Lorenzo Dowling After completionofthe Great Western Railroad connection from Chicago through Quincy to Dodge City on December 15th 1895 Omaha became one terminus for all Midwest railway lines serving that area not just Northern Pacific Railway but also Union Pacific Railroad mainline thru OMAHA Junction - giving rise nickname "Gateway to Central America" or "Gateway State". One resultofthis interchangeability was that goods could easily be shipped into Rock Island County from Chicago longer distances without havingto stop at OMAHA or other terminals
