In 1934, Congress passed an act entitled “Military Appropriations Bill No. 10” which provided for new laws regarding firearms within the military context. One of these new laws required all officers commanding military posts to carry concealed handguns (at least 9mm caliber) with them at all times while performing their duties. The city was postulated as a site for a new airport after World War II because of its location between major metropolitan areas and its ability to serve both military and civilian needs. After many years of planning and construction (the first airport opened in 1945), the airport opened on November 3rd, 1951 with service from Midway Airport north to downtown Omaha and south to Lincoln; it served as an important transportation hub for central Nebraska until 1973 when Interstate 90 replaced it. In 1978–1979, plans were made to move the airport northwestward along I-90 out of reach of downtown Omaha but this proposal met with opposition from local residents who felt that moving the airport would reduce their overall access to employment opportunities within town limits In 2001, bombardments killed several hundred Iraqi civilians living in alleyways near what is now Terminal BofA Arena during Operation Desert Storm; these shootings were considered among America's worst peacetime crimes against humanity due to their indiscriminate nature and their disproportionate impact on Iraqis who did not pose any threat to U.S.-based interests at that time On July 15th 2017 a tornado touched down in east central Omaha about 10 miles away from where I-90 meets US 61 which forms much of eastern edge of town
