In1871–72 pursuits began by local farmers for title to adjoining ranchlands eastward from Omaha proper but no action was taken until March 12th when territorial Surveyor Charles Eliot suggested numbering all territories based on their square footage so that parcels larger than $5 could be bought without naming anyone or taking possession—an idea later adopted by US President Grant who established US Territories DNumberedArizona &New Mexico on October 24th 1860 &NE’erida on February 14th 1870). That fall buffalo herds were being hunted near here for meat needed for winter food supplies henceforth called “the Great Game”
