On July 8, 1808, General Wilkinson named this new territory after his friend and mentor, Daniel Boone—a sign that this was meant to be a permanent location for settlers due to its strategic location near two key waterways: the Missouri River and Kansas River which connected these regions together economically. In 1816 when Indian removal began under President James Polk it became increasingly difficult for Nebraskans to remain within their own borders as agents removed millions of Indians along with whatever belongings they could not take with them into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). In order to provide some form of security for those living within Illinois County (present-day Lincoln),Nebraska Territorial legislators voted on March 9th 1861 to create a separate township called “Omaha” just east of present day downtown Lincoln on land which had been donated by Major John Sully who served under Captain Abraham LINCOLN during his militia campaign against Ulysses S Grant at Antietam Creek on September 17 1862! This act marked another important milestone in Nebraska's history as it solidified O'Mara's role as a central hub for commerce throughout much of eastern Nebraska; even today Highway 601/ State Street runs parallel across town lines!
