By 1870 Omaha had become an important steamboat base due to its location on key routes linking eastern markets with Great Lakes shipping points westward across Lake Michigan Mormon settlers created a new town called North Hollywood by combining parts of two other towns - Fremont (now North Arlington) on the east bank of the Missouri River and Waterloo (now Watertown) on top of Mount Hope Hill - that they had acquired along their journey northward from Nauvoo Illinois . North Hollywood grew rapidly because it was situated near major waterwayside transportation hubs like Dodge City () on Kansas State Route 66 opposite Interstate 80 (), Midwestern Railway Station () northwest of downtown (), Union Pacific Railroad Depot () northeast off I-80/US 74 (), Stonington (). South Dakota developer George Hennepin bought part of North Hollywood in 1912 for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). In 1916 he subdivided it into units known as blocks which he rented out to farmers

In 1859, General Doniphan's Expedition against the Sioux led to the Battle of Lincoln where Custer died. This event helped spur development in Omaha and nearby towns and helped make Omaha one of America's most important cultural centers.
