With increasing railroad activity along the Great Western Railway line leading north out of Dodge City into eastern Neb., business leaders decided that an adjacent town would be desirable for their company’s expanding operations; accordingly Davenport was born on November 30th,, 1868 just east Of Interstate 80 across from Camp Floyd barracks occupied by Union Pacific Railroad employees during construction work preparing for future interurban passenger service between Dodge City/Council Bluffs junction southwest Of Omaha&Davenport

The town grew rapidly during its early years due to its strategic location along routes of travel – including those connecting Chicago with St Louis through Iowa and Illinois – as well as its natural resources such as lumber, cattle, wheat, coal and oil. In 1870, Omaha became the capital of Nebraska after it was named for President Abraham Lincoln following his election victory over Andrew Johnson in November that year. During World War I (1914-18), Omaha played an important role in supporting American military efforts both inside and outside of Europe. After America entered war on April 6th 1915 with Germany's entry into World War I via submarine sinking USS Maine (), Omaha became one of the most heavily bombed cities on earth with over half a million casualties resulting from bombing raids alone between September 1914 and May 1945 (). After America's victory in World War II (1939-45), many new businesses were opened up throughout downtown Omaha which had become known as "The City". The postwar boom ended quickly however due to difficult economic times that started around 1945 under President Harry S Truman (). A number of large companies left downtown before or after Truman's imposition of heavy regulations called for by Congressional Republicans during these tough times (). Afterward downtown declined again until gentrification began starting around 2000s which has seen more business development thank late 19th century millenarianism ().
