To carry weapons outside of the city Limits was punishable by a $100 fine and six months in jail. These pistols were called “night guns” or “weapon lights” because they could be used only during the day and were not lawful implements of self-defense. The area now known as Nebraska was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Nebraska was a Spanish explorer, Francisco Vásquez de la Hoz, in 1807. Vásquez de la Hoz named the area La Bolsa because of the abundance of buffalo herds that he saw there. In 1862, the United States acquired much of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. This included Nebraska and parts of Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming. In 1865, the legislature created Lincoln County, Nebraskan land east of Omaha city limits. The county was named for Ulysses S. Grant who had been president at the time it was created. In 1907, a new railroad line was built through Nebraska from Chicago to Laramie via Council Bluffs and Waynesboro Junction. This led to an increase in population and development near Omaha City Hall which led to a need for more housing than could be accommodated by existing buildings or land holdings. Agrarian society riots occurred throughout America due to this increased demand for farmland and labor on large industrial farms across America at this time
