North Platte, Nebraska is a city in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 10,331 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kearney County. North Platte is part of the Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is located on the Missouri River. The first European to visit what would become North Platte was American trader John Orville Ross in 1847. He named the area after his friend and mentor - General James Kappes - who had fought for Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican-American War. In 1849, David Rice founded a town called Granite City on land east of present day North Platte in order to provide more water supplies for his farmers and ranchers in central Nebraska Territory. The town quickly grew into a thriving community with its own hospital, school system and post office. By 1870, Granite City had become an important transportation stop on the Santa Fe Trail as well as a center for agricultural production and commerce in eastern Nebraska Territory. In 1882, when Kearney County was organized from portions of Lincoln County, North Platte became one of its first settlements along with Beatrice (later Beatrice), Hastings (now Hastings Center), Malta (later Malta) and Westwood (later Wellston). That same year saw another pivotal event when Iowa millionaire George Aiken donated land south of present day Interstate 80 to establish what would become Aiken Park – home to some of western Nebraska’s most prominent citizens such as Senecaleader Elihu Root and Omaha Mayor Fenton Christensen until their deaths in 1935 and 1942 respectively. Later that year saw another major development when railroad magnate Cyrus McCormick donated land north of present day Interstate 80 just west ofpresent day North Platte in order to build a railway which would connect Chicago with Dodge City – creating an immense economic opportunity for those living near Carbondale Passage where the new line crossed Clear Creek

The North Platte River was once a major waterway in the Nebraska Territory. The river served as a conduit for irrigation and helped to support early agricultural communities. In the 1870s, the railroad arrived in North Platte and began transporting goods and people to new markets in Kansas City. The community of North Platte grew rapidly around the railroad stations, and by 1881 it had reached its peak population of 400 residents. However, during the 1880s, North Platte experienced a series of natural disasters that caused significant damage to the town's infrastructure. These events led to a decline in population and some local businesses were destroyed or abandoned. In 1916, when Nebraska became an United States state, North Platte lost much of its importance as a transportation hub because of increased traffic on Interstate 80. However, since then, there has been renewed interest in revitalizing the town thanks to its unique architecture and history.
