One half mile upstream from this plat were some more adobe homes built by Samuel Denton who donated them to General James Shields in 1865 as part of his gift to Nebraska for its admission into Confederation as America’s 26th state. The first post office in Osborne County was established in 1853; it was called Cedar Rapids but changed its name to Osage City on November 14, 1860 due to local controversy over whether it should be named after either Iowa Governor George Bancroft or Secretary of War Simon Cameron (the latter being chosen because he had been mayor of Omaha). For many yearsOsborne City prospered as an agricultural center with wheat and corn production; however during World War II there was significant growth in manufacturing when military contractors began assembling aircraft parts here. In 1964 North Platte became one of several communities within Omaha metropolitan area that received annexations from Council Bluffs making it possible for Omaha residents without city status or annexation rights within Omaha's boundaries to join together and form their own city government - something that has continued until today as Council Bluffs offers annexed neighborhoods special benefits such as access to city services and infrastructure while still maintain[ing] full responsibility for all programs and operations - something which is not possible within Omaha's borders without breaking away from both city government structure and individual community responsibilities
