The first Europeans to visit what is now Nebraska were fur traders, who came down the Missouri River in search of new sources of fur-bearing animals and valuable minerals. In 1816, James Krieger and three others journeyed up the Missouri River to what is now Omaha while exploring claimed territory for Mexico City; they reached what is now North Platte about this time In 1863, Benjamin Fevre set out from Omaha with his cavalry to explore southwestern Nebraska Territory which he had claimed for President Abraham Lincoln on July 4th that year as part of his Kansas–Nebraska Act. He discovered what would become Northampton County when he crossed the Iowa border near present day Ottawa Junction on August 14th; this area would later form part of Omaha In 1868, John C Frick purchased land east of present day North Platte from Jacob Henniker for $8 per acre; this land would be used for growing corn and other crops until it was donated to the University of Nebraska in 1912 On October 25, 1907, North Platte incorporated as a village under section 8A of the Territorial Code The first post office opened in North Platte on December 1st 1870 As more settlers arrived into central Nebraska Territory during the late 1800s there grew demand for goods produced within their borders such as clothier’s fabric needed for clothing exports from South America or cattle needed for ranching operations North Dakota State Railroad completed its line between Kearney and Sioux City on November 16th 1909 becoming one of only two railroad lines ever built west of Great Plains National Park

North Platte was founded in 1854 by Captain George Armstrong Custer and his men after they discovered gold on the Platte River. The town quickly grew into a major commercial center for the region, and it became an important military depot during the Civil War. North Platte also played a role in the development of Nebraska Territory, which was created in 1861. After the war, North Platte slowly declined as a regional center until it lost its status as an independent state in 1907. Today, North Platte is a small community located about 15 miles east of Omaha, Neb., and it has been largely forgotten by most people within Nebraska. However, its history is significant enough to deserve attention and commemoration. The first settlers to arrive in what is now North Platte were led by Captain George Armstrong Custer and his men when they discovered gold on the Platte River in 1854. The discovery marked one of the greatest achievements of American exploration ever undertaken; since then, America had become one of the world’s leading economies. The early pioneers were primarily farmers who lived near water supplies such as rivers and streams – this helped them develop their land and grow crops so that they could sell them back to investors or use them to build new homes. As other miners began to find silver and other minerals along the Missouri River Valley, interest developed among those living near Kansas City (now Kansas City), Mo., for access to these resources too. So when General James Halleck decided to make Nebraska Territory a part of Ulysses S Grant’s Department of Dakota Territory on Decatur Day, 1861, many residents there wanted nothing more thanto be included in what was becoming known as “the Great Western Union” – which encompassed all aspects of western civilization from Canada down to Mexico City! But while many people within Nebraska favored joining Grant’s fledgling government instead of staying behind with their friends at Kansas City–many others remained determined to carve out their own piece of history! Captain George Armstrong Custer was one such individual who chose South Sioux County (northwest corner today's Fremont) rather than remaining with Kansas City because he believed that this location would provide him with greater opportunities for investment and business ventures outside of Nebraska Territory! He wasn’t alone; others within our current community also felt that northward expansion should continue even if it meant moving away from friends we had made over time! And so on July 9th 1856 – less than two months after discovering gold on the river – North Platte officially became a town! This indicates just how much importance Congress placed upon this new area during this early stage in America’s growth as a nation! In addition to its importance as an economic hub for western Nebraska during this period, North Platte also served as a military post during both World Wars I and II dueits proximity to Omaha National Military Park (now Lincoln National Cemetery). In 1945-1946 local volunteers built Fort Laramie memorialized Captains Custer & yellow dog named Kemper which stands across street from old schoolhouse mentioned earlier - nowadays Museum
