North Platte, Nebraska is a small town in Kearny County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. North Platte was founded in 1868 by German immigrants and has been a community of German-American settlers since that time. It is located on the south side of the Missouri River and is part of the Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Platte was platted in 1868 by John C. Frémont as part of a larger platting program which included Kearny County. The town site was chosen because it had good transportation connections to nearby Omaha and Des Moines, Iowa. A post office was established in 1870, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The town's first store opened in 1872 and its first physician, Dr. Jörg Heinemann, arrived in 1875. In 1886, North Platte became the seat of Kearny County government when it was created from parts of neighboring Dodge City and Council Bluffs counties. The county courthouse moved to North Plattetown from Council Bluffs in 1906. In 1916, when World War I began, North Platte joined with other towns along the Missouri River Valley to form what would become known as "The Great Lakes Defense Force" orGLDF for short; an all-volunteer military force responsible for guarding access to Lake Oahe (then called The Snake) during wartime activities upstream from Minneapolis/St Paul proper (including most of Minnesota). During World War II there were also several skirmishes between GLDF members and Japanese forces near present-day Hastings Ranch on the north side of the river just east of Interstate 80 bridge over the Missouri River; these encounters did not lead to any physical combat but did result in damage to property both sides engaged in hostilities
