North Platte, Nebraska is a town in Osborne County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. North Platte is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hastings Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see what he named "the great American desert," Captain James Cook sailing off the coast of Africa in 1769 called it "the most assiduous and tedious journey I ever made." In 1847, Ulysses S. Grant visited this area while serving as president of the United States and wrote in his diary: "I have been exploring this vast country for weeks past and have never seen anything like it; its deserts are very extensive and well watered." North Platte was founded by German immigrants who arrived in 1854. The town's first store opened in 1855.
