North Platte, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 4,913 at the 2010 census. North Platte is the home of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and its student body. It is also the home of several small businesses and other businesses that support local commerce. The city's downtown area has several blocks of retail stores, including two Macy's department stores and four JCPenney anchors. The first settlers to what would become North Platte were George Hargrave and his family who arrived in 1853 from New York City. They founded a farm on what would become First Street near present day South Park Avenue. By 1860, three families had settled in North Platte: the Griggsons, Audensalls and Dewsleys. In 1868 John Aitken bought land on First Street from Abram Jones for $1 million dollars which he named "Aitken Prairie". In 1865 Prentiss & Green made their first crossing over plains into Iowa Territory on horseback when they met an Indian chief named Washakie while out prospecting for coal near what is now Midwestern State University in Omaha (now NEU). They became partners with Washakie in this venture and soon started shipping goods back across the Missouri River by train to Chicago. On October 1st 1865 Prentiss & Green organized as a company with twelve shares each and adopted the name "Prentiss Elevator Company". This was one of many pioneering entrepreneurs who started companies during Reconstruction in America after the Civil War ended

In 1855, the Platte River was named after General James H. K. Polk in honor of his victory in the Mexican-American War. The town of North Platte was founded on the site of present-day North Platte, Nebraska by Scandinavian immigrants in 1856. The first post office at North Platte was established in 1865. In 1868, a railroad line was completed from Omaha to North Platte and the town became an important transportation hub for farmers and traders travelling between Omaha and Kansas City. The population of North Platte peaked at around 10,000 in 1912 but declined during World War I due to military service and economic deprivation. After the war, NORPAC (North American Recovery Administration) began providing assistance to local businesses which led to a revival of the town's economy and population growth throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1969, North Platte voters approved a $10 million bond issue which funded various civic projects such as new schools, hospitals and streets. Today, North Platte is known for its vibrant downtown district with several notable hotels including The Renaissance Hotel & Casino as well as its many cultural attractions including the Nebraska Symphony Orchestra and Lincoln Center for Performing Arts
