The first Europeans to arrive in Nebraska were the Mormon Battalion, which arrived in 1846. The state was founded on August 6, 1867 by President Abraham Lincoln when he signed a bill creating the state. The land that is now Nebraska was part of Mexico until it was ceded to the United States in 1868.
