North Platte, Nebraska is a city in and the county seat of Fremont County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 34,922 as of 2017. It is the largest city in Fremont County by population and it is also the most populous city in Nebraska. North Platte is located on the Missouri River just east of Omaha. The total area of North Platte is 93 square miles (218 km²). The first European settlers arrived in what is now North Platte in 1856 when Jesse James led a group of Bleeding Hearts desperadoes through this area during his escape from prison. This region was part of the Dakota Territory at that time. After some skirmishes with Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, General George Armstrong Custer's army crossed the Missouri River and attacked these peoples nearpresent-day Omaha on July 24, 1876. This battle marked one of history's greatest cavalry engagements and helped spur American settlement throughout much of Central America. The city was founded by Fancher Jourdain in 1869 as Fort Kearney after he abandoned his claim to land along the river north of present-day Omaha due to bad weather conditions thereabouts. Jourdain named his new town after General Custer because he felt that this would help promote western development within Nebraska City limits should other claimants arise since many people believed General Custer had been unfairly executed for his role in what became known as "the Great Sioux War." Fort Kearney served primarily as a military post until it was replaced by North Platte Municipal Airport in 1942 which remains its original name today despite being situated inside present day downtown North Platte proper; however, both airports are officially called "North Platte Municipal Airport" even though they serve only portions or all of downtown while also serving neighboring townships including South Omaha proper which surrounds them to their full extent within their own municipal boundaries In 1949 North Platte won its first major award when it was chosen as an alternate site for the new University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL) campus following a long process that included input from local citizens who were impressed by its cleanliness, charm and potential for economic development beyond simply providing research opportunities for locals working at UNL itself; however, university operations did not begin until August 1, 1951 when then-Governor John Forbes signed legislation making Lincoln the state's sole public university effective January 1st following passage by both Houses of Congress via concurrent resolution As one might expect given such dramatic changes over so many decades – including three times when Lincoln became an unincorporated community before finally becoming an incorporated municipality – there has never been anything approaching stability or permanence to either internal or external management associated with either institution although occasional glimpses thereof do occur herein & there have always been individuals (& groups) vocalizing dissatisfaction/opposition thereto…A recent example may be found within currently active efforts underway to revitalize & improve existing Old Main Plaza adjacent thereto [sic] immediately south thereof where prior plans calls for significant renovation activity specifically focused on student housing units…It’s possible that “the old ways” will continue unchanged quite awhile yet but we can always hope for something better!

North Platte, Nebraska is a city in Nebraska, located on the banks of the Missouri River. The population was 24,835 at the 2010 census. North Platte is home to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Omaha State University. The area that now makes up North Platte was first settled by American Indians in the early 1800s. A mission called St. Peter's was founded here in 1837 and remains an important religious center in the city today. In 1854, gold was discovered near what is now North Platte and surrounding counties, sparking a rush of settlers to this region. This area became known as "the Gold Rush Region." The town of North Platte sprang up around this time and quickly grew into one of America's most important saloons and gambling dens. By 1870, however, other interests had taken over town life and it declined until it all but disappeared from history by 1910. In 1907 Drury Lane Theatre reopened after being closed for several years due to fire damage caused by a vaudeville performance gone wrong. It would remain one of Omaha's most popular venues throughout its many incarnations until it closed its doors for good in 1969. In 1961 construction began on Lincoln Park – which would eventually become one of North Platte’s most famous tourist attractions – becoming just part of a larger trend across much of Omaha during this time that saw much development along Interstate 10 (now I-80). It wasn't until 1990 when then-Mayor Bob Vander Plaats announced plans to redevelop downtown into an arts district with high-quality restaurants and nightlife options as well as office space for businesses that things started to change for North Plattistas. The new incarnation saw growth both inside and outside the walls of Mayor Vander Plaats' building with many new businesses opening up including Canada Dry Brewery (later taproom) followed by Heineken Brewery before finally closing down in 2018 following a series Of financial problems associated with their operations within Omaha itself (). As mentioned earlier, much older buildings have seen similar changes over time such as Lincoln Park which has been turned into an open air cinema known as Regal Cinemas since 2004 while also hosting various festivals throughout the year including July 4thFestivals which are always huge draws for locals & visitors alike (though capacity can often suffer due to heavy attendance during summer weekends). Finally there's also currently being planned redevelopment taking place around City Hall/Public Square which could see major changes down through its entire structure given how recently Nebraskans themselves have come together to push back against some proposed projects surrounding local government services within our city limitsThoroughly enjoyed his stay here!The author enjoyed their visit very much!
