Laborers who built early northcentral Nebraska towns such as North Platte worked long hours picking corn or striking oil wells until their diseases caused them to drop out of society entirely by 1920; these men are commemorated locally with an annual event known as Cornhuskers Weekend that celebrates their culture and history along with those from other parts of Nebraska during late summer/early fall. The economy of north central Nebraska has been diversified thanks to manufacturing plants established over 40 years ago by companies such as Ford Motors Company and IBM; today's primary industries include agriculture (mainly cattle) tourism (especially golfing), retail trade, transportation services and professional services such as engineering consulting, law enforcement work and insurance brokerage
