North Platte, Nebraska is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Dodge County. The population was 41,856 at the 2010 census. It is known for its agriculture, manufacturing, and especially its cheese industry. North Platte is located on the Missouri River, about halfway between Omaha and Kansas City. The land that would become North Platte was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Nebraska in 1846. The plat for the town was filed on July 16, 1851 by Major General Alfred Sully with Colfax Territorial Land Office. The town site was chosen because it included an existing millstream called "the Platte". In 1863, when Kansas became a United States territory and slavery was abolished there, North Platte became part of that state; however, it reverted to Nebraska after Kansas seceded from the United States in 1861. In 1902-1903 Sioux Indians fought a pitched battle against white herders near present-day Omaha during what is called the Great Sioux War (1898-1900). A post office named North Platte was established at this location on October 15th, 1903 under territorial jurisdiction; it continued until 1907 when Dodge County became organized as a U.S.-organized county pursuant to Act 5 of 1907 which created Douglas County in east-central Nebraska Territory following Lincoln's entry into control over all of northeastern Iowa Territory following his victory over Simon Bolivar Polk during the Black Hawk War (1849). At this time North Platte had a population of 1 resident and 10 residents served as mail carriers for Dodge County while their home villages were located south of Zanesville on both sides of the Missouri River where they still farm today including many properties within Cody Township today just northwest of Interstate 80 bisecting downtown Omaha also property now within South Dakota boundaries also east side current I-80 & west side former US 83 crossing just southwest edge old US 45 across creek
