North Platte, Nebraska is a small town located in the eastern part of Nebraska. The population was 5,402 at the 2000 census. It lies in the east-central part of Nebraska and borders Iowa to the north, Kansas to the west, and Wyoming to the south. North Platte has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. The first European settlers arrived in 1847 and named it after General James K. Polk who had served as President of the United States that year. In 1851, a post office called North Platte was established and remained in operation until 1907. During this time, there were only a few hundred people living in North Platte. By 1860, however, there were more than 2,000 residents living in North Platte. In 1862, due to an issue with land rights between two families, Congress passed a bill providing for statehood for Nebraska Territory which included what is now North Platte County. On January 1st of 1863, Governor John Cavanaugh issued an order creating township form of government for all new settlements within Nebraska Territory which would later become Union County. On February 9th of 1863, North Platte Township was organized from parts of Union County along with other nearby townships into what is now Lincolnshire County. On November 16th 1865 during World War I American soldiers were fighting on Omaha Beach near Calais when they came across German troops under command by Fritz Kuhnert consisting of about 1 battalion (30 men) commanded by Captain Wilhelm Moltke who had just come from Germany to lead his unit against American forces after having lost his original unit back at Omaha Beach four days earlier on October 15th . As American soldiers approached Kuhnert's unit they opened fire killing all 30 men including Kuhnert and wounding several others before withdrawing back towards Omaha Beach without further damage or casualties according to some sources while others claim Kuhnert's unit managed eventually to withdraw successfully unharmed ontoshore despite heavy artillery fire from both sides although some Germans did manage to swim back out again under cover
In 1868, the Nebraska Territory was created from part of Iowa. The territory was named for General John C. Fremont, who had led an expedition to explore the area in 1846-48. The first governor of the new territory was Alexander Hamlin. In 1871, a territorial legislature passed a bill creating the state of Nebraska out of parts of Kansas and Oregon. The first Nebraskan residents were brought over by railroad workers who built the Great Western Railroad through Nebraska in 1865-66. After construction ended, many Nevadans decided to move west and settle in what is now Colorado and Wyoming.
