One reason given for this nickname was because during this time there were so many wealthy people living in Omaha who could afford to buy land hereabouts as well as build houses orchalantly overlooking the river valley below their properties….. In 1886 Wm Tilton laid out plat for what would become North Platte Township on land bisected by First Street east to west ( north side), Second Street south to north ( south side), ThirdStreetwestto east(westside), FourthStreet northwest(northeastside). A post office operated under that name until 1907 when it changed its name to North Platte. The first store opened in1887 at 15th & Farnam Streets NW by J H Meyers with general merchandise items such as flourishes and hardware only available through mail order from Iowa City IA.. Over time more stores followed suit until finally all major retailers had their headquarters here by 1925 when Interstate 80 bypassed northeast Nebraska altogether making it much easier for commuters arriving via bus or train station on Broadway just outside downtown Omaha Lying idle for over 50 years until it reopened last year! Today’s downtown area between First Street east to west (north side) and Second Street south to north (south side) has been home since 1925 of local businesses & services along with several high end dining spots within walking distance including Ritz Carlton hotel & steak house located across from State Capitol building also home of Pizza Hut Suburban locations next door

North Platte, Nebraska is a small town in central Nebraska on the Missouri River. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs- Lincoln metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now North Platte was Frenchman François de Lacaze in 1768 while exploring the country as part of his exploration of the Great Plains. Lacaze named his new discovery "North Platte" after Governor James Wilkinson's original plan for military posts in that region during the French and Indian War. In 1836, Canadian fur traders built Fort Laramie near present-day North Platte to serve as their base of operations within Dakota Territory following their victory over American forces at Black Hills Canyon in 1835. The fort was abandoned soon afterward, and not restored until 1906 when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1865, Union general George Armstrong Custer fought a successful campaign against General William Tecumseh Sherman's forces at Rosebud Creek near present day North Platte. During this engagement, Custer's cavalry unit encountered Chief Joseph Smith's Mormon Battalion southeast of North Platte and skirmished with them for several hours before withdrawing without loss. As a result of this encounter and others throughout that year, many Sioux warriors deserted their camps in central Nebraska and headed north towards Minnesota en route to fight against General Sherman's army advancing through Iowa into Illinois territory on winter breaks from November 15–18th 1863." While most residents today mention those events associated with December 8th or December 9th (−1863), some remember September 16th (the date General Sherman attacked Ramfordsville) which is also celebrated as Battle Day in Nebraska history." This account may be due to confusion among local residents about US calendar days Versus Canadian calendar days which were slightly different then what we have today; however there are references back to 1836 where Native Americans mentioned similar dates both times around! In any caseBattle Day has been variously remembered here since 1863!" Today much activity takes place around historical sites like Fort Laramie & its surrounding area including concerts by local bands & stage shows; educational exhibits on local agriculture etc.; nearby schools offer programs related to history; and many people take advantage of free activities offered by organizations like Museums Unlimited every year on Battle Days all across America! The first Europeans to arrive in North Platte were the French in 1806. The town was founded by David Davenport and others in 1827, after they discovered a large gold mine on the east side of the Platte River. The site was chosen because it was located near water and had good soil for agriculture. The town prospered until the Panic of 1907, which caused a decrease in ore production. In 1913, North Platte became an incorporated city.
