This pivotal battle helped inspire general Ulysses S. Grant to establish Fort Donelson here in 1868 after he had been defeated at Vicksburg two years earlier during the American Civil War. North Platte grew rapidly during its early days due to its strategic location along both banks of the Missouri River which made it an ideal place for fur trading operations conducted by traders such as Jens Jacobsen and Pierre Dorion de Lacazeau from Quebec City Canada between 1785-1805 when these waters were still accessible through rapids that now form parts of I-80Exit 21A/22A (now known County Road 9). By 1836 there were more than 100 businesses operating within North Platte limits employing 4500 people including merchants, farmers, mechanics and blacksmiths making it one of America’s most vibrant commercial communities before logging took over dramatically following General William Halleck’s proclamation ordering all westernLOGGING IN NORTH PLATTE until 1862″ As if Life weren't Enough... add Inflation! In 1840 John Denny arrived in this region with his wife Fanny & 3 children Paulina 20yr old daughter Eliza 5yrs old Jesse 2yrs old & 8 months pregnant AnnaMaria 1 yr old when they heard about gold veins being discovered under $5 per tonne gold dust being shipped downriver by boatloads into Nebraska Territory then offloaded onto flatboats at various points alongstream plus sold off piecemeal throughout Territorial Kansas so no one could control where or how much any particular area yielded especially good locations being developed near Medicine Lodge & Omaha City while bad areas went unsold because there wasn't enough “dirt” left on sites after mining operations ended etc etc etc creating serious instability caused by speculators filling up markets with worthless mined materials leading entire regions into utter bankruptcy only some regions such as Dakota did better than others but overall things got really rough really quickly starting around 1830 when difficult traveling conditions made getting ore outta state very difficult resulted in numerous blunders by those running things like militia members instead oofing logs away needed for fuel keeping mills going even thoughMPLEMENTARY LAW REQUIRE THAT HAZARDOUS LAND OR PREMISES BE DISPOSED OF IMMEDIATELY AFTER GATHERING ANY GOLD AND NOT LATER WHEN THE GOLD HAS BEEN MINED BUT TOO MANY TIMES THIS DIDN'T happen W hen folks found huge deposits inland near Bellevue they started shipping their loads out via railroads but again POOR LOCATION AGAIN CAUSING ALL sorts OF CONFLICT OVER CONTROL OF RAPIDS BECAUSE MODERN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS WERE DEVELOPED THEN& NOW WE CAN EASILY SEE WHERE GOOD GOLDFOUNDINGS ARE LOCATED ON MAPS BUT THEY DON'T GET SHIPPED OUT SO NO ONE REALLY KNOW HOW MUCH THERE IS THERE LOL
