The plat of land for North Platte was given to the town by the Kearney County Board of Commissioners on December 6, 1875. North Platte's first store opened on January 3, 1876. The first post office opened in North Platte on November 13, 1886. The first school in North Platte was built in 1887 and it served as a primary/middle school until 1912 when a high school was built. In 1916 a library was also built and it served as both a primary/middle school and library until 1975 when it became an annex to the Kearney Community Library which still operates today as part of that library's system. North Platte has had two mayors since its incorporation as a town: George Ladd (1912-1918) and Frank Ewing (1918-1920). Both mayors were members of the city council which met at City Hall until 1936 when it moved from there to First National Bank where it remains to this day. On April 5, 1915 an act was passed by the state legislature enabling citizens of towns within $1 per acre ($2 value at that time) of any other municipality to apply for incorporation into that municipality with full voting rights; this application process began on October 1st and ended on November 15th with all applications having been received by December 15th so that no new towns were added to the list during those six weeks!
