Norfolk, Nebraska is a small town located in the heart of the Great Plains region. The population was 7,525 at the 2010 census. It is one of two towns in Norfolk County and it is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Norwich were farmers who arrived in 1855. They built log homes on what is now State Road 54. A post office was established in Norwich on October 15, 1857, and the town was named for Commodore Norvell Wakefield (1815-1877), a naval officer who served in the U.S. Navy during the Mexican-American War and as Commandant of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1865 to 1867. In addition to its farming and fishing activities, Norwich also produced hay, flour and cottonseed oil before World War II; these products were exported to other countries such as Mexico City and New York City. In 1907, Norwich joined Lincoln County which had been formed three years earlier by splitting off Ottawa County. The county seat was then moved from Grand Island to Norfolk after that town failed to meet construction demands for a new courthouse following an earthquake that struck that area on April 12, 1906. At this time there were only six residents living in Norfolk; by 1912 there were over 200 people living there including 50 businesses and two churches). The arrival of railroads led to increased agricultural production; during World War I local farmers raised beef cattle for shipment into Europe while others engaged in cereal production; thereafter most Norfolk residents engaged in manufacturing or service work outside their community which contributed greatly to its growth until about 1960 when health care became an important factor with more people working out of their home rather than coming into town for services rendered (particularly within agriculture) Norfolk experienced suburban development beginning around 1930 although some residential developments did occur prior to that time due largely to federal assistance given through both WPA ( Works Progress Administration) programs as well as military spending during World War II which led directly thereto including many dwellings being erected near state highways providing easy access both northbound and southbound (the same type of transportation existed before but now automobiles made it much easier).
