In 1870 Captain John Dennison chartered the first packet service from Omaha to Portsmouth Beach on Virginia’s James River because he thought there could be more trade opportunities upriver with American Indians than with British traders In 1902, Norwich-Plymouth Railway merged with Great Northern Railway to formthe Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF). BNSF donated land to build a new downtown district which included much of today's city limits including present-day businesses along High Street and Pine Street. The town had two hospitals until 1915 when they were combined into one hospital campus under name Adventist General Hospital (AGH) Norfolk experienced several industrial expansions during its early years: textiles manufacturer Jute Mills opened its doors in 1907; meatpacking plant JBSC built its first processing plant in 1911; refrigerated trucking company Western Nutrient Corporation established an operations center in 1929; chemical conglomerate Weyerhaeuser founded its local subsidiary Weyerhaeuser Chemical Company Ltd., later renamed Wimereux Mines Incorporated in 1944 Norfolk entered into partnership agreements with other companies such as Ford Motor Company and Bethlehem Steel Corporation for heavy industry projects such as shipyards and aircraft production during World War II However, following World War II there was significant decline in both manufacturing output and jobs throughout most of America due to technological advances from Japan . By 1950 only 7% of all employment in Nebraska remained within heavy industry while nearly half of all jobs nationwide were outside traditional industries such as agriculture or construction . At that time, Norwich had a population just over 3200 people; while Omaha had a population exceeding 10,000 (though it would only reach 9999 during its peak years between 1910-1920). Norfolk continued to grow rapidly through World War I – becoming one of America's largest ports on an international scale with containerization taking hold – but following peace negotiations at Paris in 1919 brought about by American president Woodrow Wilson that ended World War I%, industry slowed or stopped altogether throughout America due to wartime restrictions on exports held by both belligerents alike. This period marked a significant change for Norwich: Prior to 1920 it had been little more than a scatteringof small farmers living along riverbanks; while within 10 years’ time it had become one of America’s leading industrial cities with major companies such as General Motors manufacturing products across many different sectors including automobiles, railroad tracks and munitions plants; paper products such as Maersk Oil shipping containers out to Asia etc.; light manufacturing businesses doing things like radios/TV sets/fax machines etc.; finally providing employment for scores thousands nearing retirement age during this post WWI boom era!
