Norfolk, Nebraska is a small town located in the north-central portion of the U.S. state of Nebraska. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census, up from 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. Norfolk is bordered by Kearney to the east,Council Bluffs to the south and west, and Hastings to the north. The name "Norfolk" was given to it by Captain John Smith who discovered it on his trip through what is now Nebraska in 1620. The first settlement in Norfolk was made on a farm known as Marshfield West which became known as Portsmouth when Portsmouth residents moved there from Norwich, England in 1847. In 1854, Norfolk received its own post office which lasted until 1907. The first school in Norfolk was built in 1867 and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of pupils. A new school was built in 1870 which served for many years until it also closed due to lack of students. In 1922, a second school building was constructed which still serves as an educational institution today (Norfolk Academy). In 1928, Norfolk became one of five towns within Lincoln County that were consolidated with neighboring Council Bluffs into one county under then Governor Anson Latham; this move helped improve roads and commerce within the area while reducing taxes for both communities collectively In 1959, after three decades during which no major changes occurred to its government or demographics within its limits – except for an occasional increase or decrease in population size – Norfolk annexed Walshville adjacent thereto making it home territory for over fifty years! This annexation resulted from a land dispute between two villages situated about four miles apart along Highway 10 approximately two miles long and less than one mile wide lying between present day Newport Hills on my backyard property line (northwest) and Lakeshore Boulevard just east of I-580/I-75 southeast boundary (southwest) - this issue had been going on since 1952 when we first met our neighbor who’s daughter lives there today - she knows all about it! When I asked her why she didn’t annex us back then she said because at that time we were only five people! Today we have over 100 people living there including children born here since 1958! Most everyone here has been born close enough together that they can trace their ancestry back more than 50 years! We are proud our history makes us unique even though most people here wouldn’t know where Norfolkshire, England is if they saw it written down!) Today's economy depends largely upon agriculture but some essential services such as healthcare are provided by businesses like Mercy Health Network & Clinics Incorporated (a subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield Corporation), Northwest Airlines & Great Northern Railway Company., UPS Ground Service Center., Sioux Falls National Guard Armory.,and Stroudsburg Mall Shopping Center., all located nearby . Commerce has always played an important role here with several stores anchorting arterial shopping corridors like Route 66 across town near Present Day Newport Hills Rd./Hwy 10 intersection; Interstate 80 just east of town past Hastings; US Highway 6 running through town northwest past Present Day Omaha Blvd.;and US Highway 281 running southwest past Waterloo Rd./Route 66 intersectionThere are also several smaller malls surrounding downtown such as First American Outlet Plaza outside downtown proper; MidAmerica Financial Field located off Keystone Road just northwest of city limits;Stroudsburg Mall Shopping Center adjoining First American Outlet Plaza inside Downtown proper; Willowbrook Mall located off Interstate 80 northeast corner just outside city Limits; And finally Hampton Roads Regional Airport located just southwest edgeof city limits serving much needed air travel services within easy reach for residents & visitors alike .)
