Norfolk, Nebraska is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. Norfolk is located on the Missouri River near its confluence with the Omaha River. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Norfolk was a man named Johnathan Hodge who came to Nebraska in 1854 from Virginia. He founded a small town called Hodgeville on what is now South Prairie Road just west of present day Norfolk. Hodgeville briefly served as county seat before being moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1861 when that city became the new county seat of Douglas County. Norfolk was originally laid out as a township by order of the territorial legislature on November 6, 1861. On March 3, 1872, it became an incorporated village when all but one resident of Plymouth Township voted to join together and form a new Village Corp named for their locality – Norwich. The incorporation provided for powers and privileges similar to those enjoyed by townships within Douglas County and allowed Norwich “the power . . . to make all kinds of contracts” with other municipalities within Douglas County without having to go through the ceremonial process of nomination and election that was common among villages at this time On December 7, 1902, Norfolk Incorporation went into receivership due to lack of financial support from members thereof; however all property except personal property still vested in the townspeople until receivership expired on July 1, 1904 pursuant to law which required such property be transferred either immediately upon dissolution or conveyed subject to payment of damages if not so done within thirty days after notice had been sent both orally and written setting forth particulars concerning such transfer On October 2nd 1905 local residents successfully petitioned Governor Curtis Jayne for annexation intoDouglas County effective January 1st 1906 becoming one full member under state jurisdiction subject only to taxation by DouglasCountyParish

Norfolk is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Norfolk County. The population was 25,898 at the 2000 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Nebraska. It became an official city on May 14, 1906. Norfolk lies at the confluence of the Missouri and Omaha Rivers, which forms a natural border with Iowa to its east and Kansas to its west. The area that is now Norfolk was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times. The first European settlement in what is now Norfolk date back to 1836 when James Kapp founded a fur trading post on land he had purchased from the Sioux nation. In 1840, John Davenport founded a mill complex near present-day Norwich that would become one of Nebraska's major economic engines during the 19th century. A year later, Mormon pioneers arrived from Utah via wagon train and established a town called Independence on North Indian Creek about two miles north of present-day Norwich. By 1851, Independence had outgrown Nauvoo and was renamed Norwich after then-British Prime Minister William Pittthe Younger's son-in-law Fenton Morton (from nearby Lancaster). In 1857, local entrepreneurs formed what would become known as The Cotton States Trading Company to expand trade through water routes between Great Britain and Texas across America's vast cotton fields; this company eventually became part of United States Navigation Company (USNC). On July 16, 1861 – just days after Lincoln signed into law "An Act for Suppressing Unlawful Soil Migrants" – USNC laid claim to all of Nebraska Territory including Norwich Harbor; this event marked American entry into World War I (WW1). Norwich quickly emerged as one of Omaha's most important commercial districts due to its strategic location at both ends of Omaha River: within easy reach for military forces stationed along both banks while also being close enough to provide goods and services necessary for local residents' needs such as transportation, communication & commerce
Norfolk was founded by Captain John Smith in 1609. It grew quickly as a trade and shipping center, with a wharf and harbor on the banks of the Ohio River. The town had a population of about fifty people by 1700. It changed hands several times before it was purchased by the Nebraska Territory in 1854. Norfolk became an important railroad junction and served as the capital of Nebraska from 1861 to 1868.
