In the early 1900s, a man named Hiram S. Chubb founded the Norfolk (NE) Shipbuilding Company in order to build ships large enough to carry goods between Omaha and Great Lakes ports. The company produced some of the world's largest and most successful ocean-going vessels, including the Tacoma, Seattle, Milwaukee, Quincy, Detroit and Erie Passenger Steamships. North Carolina shipbuilder Ewing & Chubb also built some of these big boats. The company was eventually acquired by American Can Corporation in 1938 and its assets were merged into that company's existing cannery operations in Omaha. In 1962 American Can merged with Minneapolis-St. Paul Brewing Company to form Anheuser-Busch Brewery NV. This made Nebraska the state with the second-largest brewery behind Minnesota's Twin Cities Brewing Company LLC. However, Anheuser-Busch never developed any significant cannery or shipping businesses here beyond providing beer for local retailers (and selling advertising space on local buses). After years of decline, Norfolk Shipbuilding closed its doors in 2002; however it is still considered an important part of Nebraska history because it helped establish Omaha as one of America's leading maritime cities during World War II.

Norfolk, Nebraska is a town in Kearny County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs, NE-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norfolk was platted in 1881 and named for Rear Admiral John Farragut. The first post office in Norfolk was opened in 1881. In 1907, Norfolk changed its name to Kearney to honor General James Kearny who had fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as Governor of Nebraska from 1886 to 1888. The townspeople voted on April 9, 1907 to change their name back to Norfolk after Admiral John Farragut (1801-1895). The last resident of Norwich died on December 26th, 2009 at the age of 97 years old. In 1915, during World War I, Norfolk became an occupation base for American troops stationed in Europe because it offered good shipping access from Lake Superior and nearby lakeside communities like Omaha andCouncil Bluffs. After the war ended in 1918 however the military left Norfolk largely empty until 1925 when they reopened it as a commercial center with a new airport built onshore that still serves as an important transportation hub today. Norfolk has been home to many businesses over the years including grocery stores such as Super 8s and Albertsons which continue to operate today; banks including JBLU Bank and First National; health care facilities such as Mercy Health Partners Hospital; numerous restaurants including Portsmouth’s Legends Grill & Bar and The Larry’s Place; multiplex theaters such as Regal Cinemas; two golf courses - one located just outside town limits near Clearwater Harbor while another is located about 5 miles east of town off US Highway 61; several small shopping malls including one inside city limits called "CenturyLink" which has since been closed down but still contains remnants of its mall design such as Sears Tower (now known as Dillard's) along with other smaller stores within walking distance like Macy's or Kohl's department storechains etc.; Finally there are several large warehousesdating back to before World War II which have since become residential developments complete with their own schools/parking garages/driveways etc...All these various businesses have helped contribute significantly towards making Norwich what it is today: a vibrant community with plenty going on both inside and outside its walls!
