Norfolk is located on the Missouri River, about halfway between Omaha and Lincoln. They named their settlement Norwich after Norwich, England. On April 3rd of 1860, the town became one of 112 towns formed by the Nebraskan legislature following the Kansas-Nebraska Act which created Nebraska Territory. Norfolk continued to grow rapidly due to its location and good soil qualities until it reached its peak population of approximately 10,000 in 1920 when it was reported that over 50% of all workers in Douglas County were employed within Norfolk's borders! However during World War II Norfolk saw its largest influx of people as a result of the war effort with citizens working in local factories and plants throughout Nebraska but also abroad! After peace came back to America there were few opportunities for employment so many residents decided to move away from Norwich into other parts of Douglas County or even out into neighboring states such as Iowa or Illinois where opportunities were more plentiful!
