On July 1, 1861, Nebraskans volunteered to fight for their country in the Civil War. Many members of Company G enlisted from Norfolk, NE. In 1865, the company was reorganized as part of the 5th Indiana Infantry Regiment and continued fighting in the war until it was disbanded on September 2nd, 1865. After the war ended, many members of Company G moved away from Norfolk and into other states so that they could start new lives. Some veterans of Company G continued to live in Norwich until they died; others moving out-of-state or returning home after awhile.
