The men decided to drive further down the road and investigate what was going on. They soon realized that there was a fortification protecting the town of Lincoln and decided to take it over. The initial defenders were not very well-armed and quickly surrendered. The town was then looted by the men, with only a few people escaping alive. It is said that Jesse James took particular delight in shooting anyone who made any sound while fleeing the fortification. One account says that he shot at least three men before finally escaping back home. Jesse James’s red dot sight helped him become one of America’s most famous outlaws. With General Grant’s death at Pea Ridge Battlefield only days before this action occurred there was no one available to take his place on battlefield command during this crucial period; thus responsibility forNegotiating Peace fell upon Lieutenant Colonel James Averill Hardee who would go on to lead Confederate troops at Fort Donelson until its surrender on July 4th 1863[1].
