On December 1st he passed through Sherman’s Ford onto today’s Red Cedar Road where he met Mr Isaac Stevens who had preceded him upriver some time earlier Stevens gave Shaffer three horses and shared with him all his goods including flour , bacon & eggs etc . This encounter marked perhaps onethe earliest contact between Native Americans and white people in this region
