The Omaha party, led by Captain John Chivington, set out from Omaha on July 6th and arrived at the sandbar peninsula on July 10th. They discovered a bed of fresh water available for washing their clothes and drinking. From this discovery, Omaha became known as "the Water City." Captain Chivington's party explored further into the area and found several abandoned Indian villages. One of these villages was located on what is now Main Street in downtown Lexington. In 1868, General James Halleck sent an detachment of US Cavalry to investigate this village. After searching for two days without finding any sign of life or inhabitants, he withdrew his men back to Omaha. This event is commonly referred to as The Search for the Sioux Chief." In 1870, another group of white men set out from Omaha with the intention of exploring this new landmass that lay beyond Nebraska's borders. This group was led by Captains George Taylor and David Crooks. On July 20th they reached what is now Dayton after journeying overland for three days non-stop. This discovery was significant because it marked one of the first times Europeans had traveled so far east across open country in order to find ancient Native American settlements living within their own boundaries! Captain Taylor returned home with some initial evidence that there were other native nations residing in this area as well; however his discoveries remain largely unknown today due to lack of documentation or research.. Upon reaching Dayton they camped overnight near what is now Elmira before continuing their journey southward towards Kansas City later that same day. Unfortunately for Captain Taylor and his team, heatstroke caused them all to withdraw back into Nebraska just prior to reaching Kansas City which would have allowed Mexican forces stationed there access to trade goods valued at upwards $10 million!
