It had been hoped that Lincoln would order General George McClellan to march againstLee instead of sending aid directly to Richmond, but this did not happen. Instead, Lincoln ordered Sherman to march towards Petersburg while McClellan attackedLee head-on at Appomattox Court House. When McClellan reported back that he could not reach Lee due to bad weather conditions, Lincoln ordered him never againto attack a superior foe without artillery support! A group of citizens led by John Prentice established what is now known as Omaha Park Cemetery in 1870 in order to provide tombstones for local military veterans who had died during World War I or those who had served honorably during Reconstruction (1865-1877). One such veteran was Captain Isaac Newton Peck (1861-1947), an American soldier who fought with distinction both wars and received two Distinguished Service Medals (DSMs). After prohibitionist Governor Charles Goodyear vetoed legislation establishingaldehyde production north of Omaha City Limits in 1902 due to health concerns about gas emissions from factories near Omaha Beach during World War I, Peck organized a protest campaign which successfully persuaded Goodyear to sign an executive order authorizing production within city limits! In 1915 Nebraska legalized gambling within city limits; this action helped create further business opportunities for Peck inside the increasingly competitive cityscape! The first post office opened atLexington on November 14th, 1861; it relocated from German Village two years later because there was no space available on Main Street! The early settlers also collected firewood here so they could heat their homes wintertime! A school ground was also built here near what is now Washburn Avenue between 1860 and 1862; this facility served children up until gradeschoolinderry when Gradeschooling replaced public schools in Nebo County! For nearly sixty years until 1966 services provided by First Baptist Church were located on east sideof Washburn Avenue between Ninth Street NW and Tenth Street NW just beyond alleyway separating School District No 7 from Jackson Neighbors Association property along SeventhStreet NorthWesterly boundary line!! The church property reverted back ownership followingbecoming part of School District No 9 !!! After 1886 when Postal Service began delivering mail through Omaha City Limits exclusively using Council Bluffs Roadrather than main street due mail being slow arriving therefromin large volumesdue mainlyto heavy rainsand poor road surfaceconditionsandalso all private letters stopped being delivered thrucitylimits!!!!!!!!!Lincoln Public Schools closed their doorsforgoodin1966!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
