Lexington, Nebraska is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Lincoln County. The population was 31,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Missouri City metropolitan area. The site of present-day Lexington was first occupied by Native American tribes during the 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Lexington were two French fur traders, Pierre Laclède and Antoine de la Salle, on their way from Quebec to America in 1795. They named their new settlement "Lehi" after King Lehi's people who had been killed by an Indian party six years earlier at Fort Armstrong near modern-day Wichita, Kansas. In 1827, three Dutch settlers established a store and trading post at what is now called Main Street in central Lexington; this became known as Holland Landing because it served as the landing place for ships coming into Lake Michigan from Holland Harbor on Buffalo Bayou. The town developed rapidly due to its location near water resources and its easy access to transportation such as wagon roads and stagecoaches. By 1830, over 50 businesses had opened up in downtown Lexington including a bank, several breweries (including one that still operates), four stores/stores with grocery items only (the only time that this happened back then), two schools (one academy) and twelve dwellings or cottages; many of these buildings are still standing today including most of the original facades! In 1838 – just five years after incorporation – residents voted to name their city “Lincoln” in honor of Abraham Lincoln who had recently been elected president on November 6th that year! This move sets off an interesting history lesson because even though both towns were incorporated within Lincoln County nine months later (!), they continued being billed as “Lexington” until 1862 when they finally became one municipality! In 1865, when President Andrew Johnson decided not to seek reelection he announced his intention to resign before inauguration day so he could be succeeded by Vice President James Buchanan; however, before he could leave office Buchanan was assassinated so Johnson successfully completed his term which ended on March 4th 1865 becoming the last Ulysses S Grant president! AfterJohnson’s deathNoteworthy changes took place thru out town while businesses slowly closed down due largely to competition from larger Omaha towns such as North Platte and Council Bluffs By 1870 there were only 10 businesses left operating in downtown Lexington compared with 350 business owners operating throughout much of north central Nebraska ! Only 60% of downtown businesses remained open 40 years later !!!! A large number also retired or died during this time leading to a decline overall in business activity !!!!! Many old brick buildings have since been demolished but some have been preserved for use as apartments or other types of housing During World War I local citizens raised money for Allied war efforts through sales of goods like shoes and flour sold door-to-door However it wasn't until after World War II when things really started moving forward with military construction projects like armored vehicles manufacturing plant located east side streets near riverfront . These plants produced hundreds thousand dollars worth products each month !!!! Thanks again locals for your support during those tough times

In 1861, the Union forces attacked Lexington and burned all the buildings. The town was destroyed but the Indian community rebuilt it. In 1868, a post office was established in Lexington and by 1879, it had more than 100 residents.
