In 1875 a new courthouse was built in Lexington and it is still standing today. It is also known as “the Old Capitol”. In 1881 a cotton gin was built in downtown Lexington and it is still standing today. It is also known as “the Cotton Gin Building” or simply “the Cotton Gin”). In 1886 an oil refinery was built nearby and it is still standing today (it is now part of BP). In 1889 a water tower was built nearby and it is still standing today (it has been replaced several times). On March 5th, 1896 an electric power line arrived inLexington and this made possible the beginning of what are now called “The Dark Ages” for this community because electricity didn’t arrive until 1893!

On November 3, 1867, the first public land sales in Lexington occurred when the Nebraska Territorial Legislature approved a bill to sell 640 acres of land east of the Missouri River. The sale was part of a larger effort to create new counties in Nebraska. The land was divided into four parcels and sold at $10 per acre. The first white settler in Lexington was George Hines, who came to the area in 1868 from Illinois. He built his home on what is now Eighth Street. In 1870, he married Sarah Ann Laughlin and they started a seed business that grew into an agricultural concerns. In 1872, Drury opened a general store on Third Street which became one of the town's most popular businesses for goods and services. In 1876, John Davenport arrived from Iowa with his family and began farming on Second Street near the present day intersection of Fourth and Fifth Streets. He later moved to First Lane where he raised horses and cattle until 1889 when he built his own house on Third Street. In 1899, a post office was established at Lexington with Wm Hays as Postmaster General. The townspeople voted to change its name to Omaha after their state capital city in 1907.
