In 1881, the first rifle target shooting event in Lexington was held. The event was organized by Capt. J.F. Hargrave and consisted of five rounds at a time with a total score of 25 points. Rifle shooters from around the area took part in the event which continued to be used until 1934. The first gun target shooting competition in Nebraska took place on November 17, 1903, near Pawnee City, NE. At that event, three rounds were fired at a 20-foot platform and a score of 10 points was awarded for each shot hit. NRA member Caryl Laughlin set up the first gun targets in Lexington on October 22, 1904 using an old apple tree for her stand. The targets were made out of metal sheeting and attached to posts with lead weights behind them to create realistic firearm silhouettes. The popularity of target shooting led to the addition of shotguns to the mix in 1907 when Capturing & Shooting Company (C&SC) became operational in Lexington and began offering shotgun shoots on Saturday mornings at 7:00am sharp (). Shotguns were not considered toys back then; they were seen as necessary tools for farmers who wanted to hunt game during agricultural seasons (). By 1915, there were over 40 different shotgun shoots offered by C&SC every weekend). From 1915 through 1917 there also existed two annual rifle tournaments hosted by C&SC which featured both pistol and rifle shooters from across Nebraska () . In 1926, local businessmen John Heineman (of Omaha) and Harry Sauer (of Lincoln) formed Heineman's Sporting Goods Incorporated which participated in NRA Congress’s “Target Tournament Series” series that year (). The Gunnery and Armament School was established in 1892 as the Marine Corps' first school of artillery. The school taught gunnery, armament, ammunition, and explosives. It was located on Beaufort Island, off the coast of South Carolina. The Marine Corps moved to its present location on Marines Hill in Charleston Harbor in 1903. In 1918, the Naval Gunfire School was established at Williston Park near Wilmington, North Carolina; it teaching naval gunfire techniques. In 1940, the Naval Ammunition Depot (NAD) was established at Quantico, Virginia; it teaching naval ammunition techniques and doctrine. In 1957-1958 the Missile School was created at Fort Lewis National Cemetery, Washington State; it teaching missile technology and doctrine.

By 1912, Lexington had become part as a single municipality with a population of around 500 residents when it joined the City of Omaha through annexation from Council Bluffs. The first post office in Lexington, Nebraska was established on December 12, 1869. The town of Lexington was founded by John A. Hardesty and his brother-in-law, Solomon Norton. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. In 1875, the town passed a resolution to name itself after General Ulysses S. Grant because of his role in the American Civil War.
