Lexington is a city in and the county seat of Laramie County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 9,341 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Sheridan County by population. The town of Lexington was founded in 1878 on the site of present-day Lexington High School. The first post office opened in 1870. The history of Lexington can be traced back to when land was acquired by John C. Fremont from Chief Black Hawk for $2 per acre (one dollar per foot). In 1878, Colonel George Armstrong Clark bought 640 acres (24 km²) of this land from Fremont for $4 per acre (two dollars per foot). This purchase created an initial community called Cedar Rapids which would eventually become part of Lexington proper. In 1881, a company known as the Central Kansas Railroad Company constructed a track through what is now downtown Lexington and began to deliver goods to settlers there. This new town developed rapidly due to its close proximity to railroad transportation and easy access to water supplies. By 1886, over 100 businesses had been established within downtown Lexington and it had become one of the most important cities in Sheridan County. On November 5, 1890, voters approved a charter for what would become the University of Nebraska - Lincoln which relocated from Omaha two years earlier after becoming embroiled in financial scandals that rocked Omaha's business community during that time period. On January 1, 1896, all students at U Neb - Lincoln were transferred to newly renamed Lewis & Clark College – making it one of only two colleges operating within Nebraska at that time! This rapid growth continued into the 1990s as more businesses opened up near downtownLexington while also increasing housing development along Pecan Street between 7th and 8th Avenues NW – resulting in some current neighborhoods such as 6th & Elm being completely built up since their incorporation into town limits! Today, although trade has slowed down significantly since 2000 due to declines throughout both industry and consumer spending nationwide; many jobs remain available outside traditional retail sectors across various types/branches including health care/medical technology; aerospace manufacturing; engineering services; information technology; restaurant management; real estate development / leasing…the opportunities are still there for businesses large or small who wish to explore them!

The population grew rapidly over the next few years as settlers arrived from Iowa, Minnesota, and other parts of the United States. By 1860, the population had reached 20,000. The statehood referendum in 1862 resulted in a victory for Nebraska by a wide margin.
