Lincoln moved his government from downtown Omaha to Lexington on April 12th 1865 when Union troops liberated it from Confederate control following its fall at Appomattox Court House. The new capital served as the seat of government until 1868 when Lincoln moved back to Washington D.C.. While Lexington experienced some growth during these years – including construction of roads and bridges – it never reached its heyday like neighboring cities such as Topeka or Wichita did immediately after their respective cityhoods were achieved within their respective states (Topeka being granted statehood in 1904).
