The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1886 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1896, Lexington became the county seat of Lincoln County, and soon afterwards it began to grow rapidly again. By 1912, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1924, Lexington was chosen as the site for the new Lincoln Municipal Airport. The airport has since been one of the most important in Lincoln County, and it has served both local passenger traffic and international flights. In 1972, Lexington underwent a major renovation which included several new buildings and an expansion of its shopping center. Since its founding, Lexington has been a center for agricultural production and commerce.Today much of what is now downtown was built in this time period including both the municipal library/theater complex as well as many businesses such as hardware stores and grocery stores. A number of interesting historical artifacts from this time have been preserved at various locations throughout town such as the old courthouse building on Main Street which still serves as a museum today (it was also used as a detention facility after World War II) or even more recently at Sayre Park where there are several reconstructed pioneer huts available for public visitation
In 1854, a group of men from Lexington, Nebraska agreed to purchase 160 acres of land from the Sac and Fox Indian tribe. The men named their settlement "Lexington" after the city in England where they were born. The town grew quickly and by 1870 had a population of about 300 people. In 1902, Lexington was renamed Topeka after Topeka, Kansas, the state capital at the time.
