In 1935, the NRA moved its headquarters from Omaha to Lexington after purchasing land near campus for that purpose.
Lexington is a town located in Perkins County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,775 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Missouri River west of Omaha. The first people to live in Lexington were the Pawnees and Potawatomies who traveled down the Missouri River to hunt game. They built their first lodges near where the current courthouse stands today. In 1854, Lewis and Clark passed through this area on their way from St. Louis to Independence Rock in Dakota Territory. This event is often cited as the beginning of American civilization in this area. In 1865, General George Hines relieved General John Fetterman of duty as military commander of Nebraska because he believed that Fetterman was not able to handle ammunition supplies for his troops effectively. General Hines named Lexington as his headquarters for this mission and made it one of his key locations in Nebraska. After General Hines resigned from command in 1868 due to health problems, Governor Valentine appointed Major Jens Ludwig as acting military commander until a new commander could be found or nominated by Valentine. From 1870-1879, Lexington served as Territorial capital for the newly organized county of Perkins while Omaha played host to all branches of government including streetcars (the first), electricity (the first), waterworks (the first), schools (the first), post office (the first) and hotels/motels (the earliest). In 1881-1882 an irrigation system was built around Lexington which allowed farmers to grow corn, beans, pumpkins and other vegetables without having to irrigate their fields; however, these systems were discontinued after a few years due to low yields and high costliness compared with those achieved later by irrigation systems based on pumping water from rivers or reservoirs

In 1892, Dr. George Weider developed a gas-fired air pistol that he called the Arisaka. Weider's design was based on the idea of using compressed air to fire pellets from a barrel instead of traditional powder cartridges. The first successful test firing of Arisaka in 1893 occurred at the Tokyo Arsenal. It used an 8-inch bore and fired lead shots at a distance of up to 100 yards.
In 1863, Lexington was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces. The battle killed two Union soldiers and wounded many more. In 1865, Lexington became the site of an all-out battle between Union and Confederate forces. The battle resulted in the death of about 75% of both sides' combatants.
Lexington was founded in 1836 by the father of Nebraska, James K. Polk. The town grew rapidly after it was named for Lexington, Kentucky, where Polk had been born. In 1860, when Lincoln was elected president, he moved to Lexington and began to campaign there.
