The town grew rapidly and by 1875 it had over 100 residents. In 1880, La Vista became an incorporated town with a mayor and five trustees. In 1907, La Vista Mayor George Hennepin died suddenly and without leaving any children to take care of the town's affairs; his widow assumed complete control of the townspeople until her death in 1916. In 1924, La Vista became one of several towns in Nebraska required to join the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). This gave rise to its nickname "the housing capital of America." The economy of La Vista changed dramatically after World War II when thousands of veterans returned to find that most of their former homes were destroyed or left vacant because they were not approved for HUD financing under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. In 1961, Interstate 80 crossed through central La Vista and linked it with Omaha; this made it easier for people living near I-80 to get into Nebraska than before because now they only needed to drive two hours south from Omaha to reach their destination on foot or bike! After years of growth and development led by Mayor John Schieffer (1981-1991), much progress has been made at both local level and state level since then: new roads have been built - including a bypass around downtown which eliminated traffic congestion - public works projects have increased access to drinking water for residents near reservoirs and more storage capacity has been added for electric batteries for handicapped citizens' vehicles .
