It grew rapidly due to the opening of the Nebraska Railroad in 1868 and the development of farming and ranching around it. By 1870, La Vista had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1881, following the death of President James K. Polk, Nebraska became an territory with its own government. As a result, La Vista reverted to Mexican hands and declined for several years until an agreement was made in 1886 under which Mexican nationals were given land in exchange for their allegiance to Nebraska as well as residency rights within the state. After this period of prosperity and growth, however, immigration began to dwindle because Mexicans were not allowed to work on white soil without being fingerprinted and registered with authorities; this led to increased poverty and social problems in La Vista over time
