La Vista is a small town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs- Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in La Vista was George Napier in 1868. The community was named after General James H. Lane's rancho (ranch) on the east side of the Platte River. La Vista began to grow rapidly after construction of the Nebraska and Northwestern Railway in 1879 led to increased traffic through the area. Many new homes were built near Main Street between 1880 and 1890, including one by Leland Stanford Sr., father of Stanford University president Lawrence Hapgood Jr., who also founded Santa Clara University in Palo Alto, California. In 1902, La Vista had a schoolhouse and three stores; by 1912 it had 10 buildings with a population of 150 residents. In 1916,[1] La Vista became an incorporated town with a post office and two stores;[2] it grew rapidly again until World War II when most businesses closed because of rationing during World War II.[3][4] In 1945,[5][6] many farmers left for other parts of Nebraska due to high prices for wheat during the war;[7][8][9] only a few hundred people lived in La Vista when it merged into Lincoln on July 1, 1946.[10] It lost its status as an incorporated town upon merger but continued to grow slowly until becoming one of Lincoln's fastest-growing municipalities since 1940 according to city data from 2015.[11][12][13]'s rapid growth has come at a cost: over time more than $200 million has been invested into infrastructure improvements such as roads, water systems and parks alone,[14][15]} although some services have not seen corresponding increases in price or usage due largely to lower unemployment rates among residents living within walking distance of those amenities.– [16]'s neighbor Iowa City experienced similar growth but without any major investments following its incorporation as an unincorporated community on January 1st 1949.'
