The first settlers on the La Vista land were John and Polly Harker. They arrived in 1847, and started to homestead the land. The town of La Vista was founded in 1849, by nine men from Illinois. The town grew quickly, and soon had a school, post office, jail, and store. In 1870, the Nebraska Territorial Legislature granted La Vista city status. The city hall was built in 1871, and became the home of City Council. In 1888, La Vista voted to join the United States as a state. The city experienced rapid growth during its time as a state capital; it had a population of over 100 people by 1907. In 1912, La Vista elected its first female mayor, Lillian H.; she served until her death in 1933.
